Production Director, Joey Spehar, takes you through the WYEP music library and into the studio to produce The Allegheny Front as part of The Allegheny Front's Spotlight Series for the Heinz Endowments: www.heinz.org The Allegheny Front: Where the Music Matters by Joey Spehar, Production Director Every sound you hear on The Allegheny Front goes through my hands, or rather my ears, at some point before it reaches yours. I record the voices you have come to know and love on our program. I gather and combine sounds and make them into seamless stories. This is all fine and good and very rewarding, but there is another aspect to the show that really gets my creative juices flowing. I love thinking about and selecting the music that accompanies the stories on The Allegheny Front. It's the best part of the job! The mood and the flow of the show depend on the music that you hear between the segments. If we just talked and read news, as captivating as those stories may be, you would g! et bored very quickly. The right song - or even just the right few notes - can offer so much to the listener. Music can help you soak in what you've just heard or it can set the tone for what you are about to hear. It can help you decide how you really feel about the news you have just consumed. A dark, pensive bit of instrumentation can help the listener reflect after taking in a story about a worker who died in a mining accident.
